What Is Dental Anxiety in Children?

Dental anxiety is a feeling of fear, nervousness, or dread that a child experiences before or during a dental visit. It can range from mild unease about sitting in the dental chair to severe distress that makes it difficult for the child to cooperate with treatment. Pediatric dental anxiety is one of the most common barriers to children receiving the oral healthcare they need.

Dental anxiety is different from a simple dislike of the dentist. A child who is mildly uncomfortable may still cooperate with gentle encouragement. A child with moderate to severe dental anxiety may cry, resist treatment, refuse to open their mouth, or try to leave the office. In some cases, dental anxiety can develop into a true dental phobia, a persistent and intense fear that leads to complete avoidance of dental care.

Left unaddressed, pediatric dental anxiety can have real consequences. Children who avoid the dentist are more likely to develop cavities, gum disease, and other oral health problems that require more invasive treatment down the road. Early intervention is important. Helping your child build positive associations with the dentist now can prevent years of avoidance and protect their smile for the long term.

Common signs your child may have dental anxiety:

  • Resisting, crying, or refusing to cooperate at dental appointments

  • Attempting to avoid or cancel dental visits

  • Complaining of stomach aches or feeling sick before appointments

  • Racing heart, sweating, or visible distress in the dental chair

  • Clinginess or withdrawal when dental visits are mentioned

  • Difficulty sleeping the night before an appointment

What Causes Dental Anxiety in Children?

Pediatric dental anxiety can develop from several sources, and understanding the root cause helps Dr. Grover tailor her approach to each child. At Mini Miners Pediatric Dentistry, we take time to learn what makes each child anxious so we can address it directly.

A negative past experience. This is one of the most common causes of dental fear in children. A previous visit that involved pain, discomfort, or feeling rushed can create lasting anxiety about returning to any dentist.

Fear of pain or discomfort. Even if a child has never experienced dental pain, the anticipation of something hurting can be enough to trigger anxiety. Children often imagine the worst based on stories they have heard from peers or older siblings.

Loss of control. Lying back in a chair with someone working inside their mouth can feel vulnerable and overwhelming for a child. The feeling of not being in control is a significant anxiety trigger, especially for younger kids.

Sensory sensitivities. Bright lights, unfamiliar sounds, new tastes, and the feeling of dental instruments can be overwhelming for children with heightened sensory responses. This is especially common in children with autism spectrum disorder or sensory processing differences.

Parental anxiety transfer. Research shows that children can pick up on their parents' feelings about the dentist. If a parent feels anxious or uses negative language about dental visits, children are more likely to develop similar fears. This is completely normal, and it is something Dr. Grover helps parents navigate at Mini Miners.

How Dr. Grover Helps Anxious Children at Mini Miners

Dr. Alison Grover and her team at Mini Miners Pediatric Dentistry use a comprehensive, child-centered approach to help kids with dental anxiety feel safe and comfortable. Rather than pushing children to power through their fear, Mini Miners builds trust gradually through environment, pacing, and communication.

A Space Designed for Comfort

Every detail of the Mini Miners office was created to reduce anxiety in children. The waiting area features arcade games, a slide, and hand-painted train tracks on the floors to help kids feel playful and relaxed before their appointment. Treatment rooms are private rather than open-bay, which prevents overwhelming your child with the sights and sounds of other patients. Each room has a ceiling-mounted TV where children choose their own movie to watch during treatment, giving them a positive distraction throughout the visit. Chairs can be adjusted for children who feel anxious about lying flat on their back.

Patient-Led Pacing

Anxiety often comes from feeling rushed or powerless. Dr. Grover moves at every child's individual pace. For kids who are anxious, that means not pushing beyond their comfort level, gradually building familiarity with each visit, and celebrating small victories along the way. If a child is only comfortable sitting in the chair and opening their mouth at the first visit, that is a success. Progress builds over time, and we never force treatment on a child who is not ready.

The Power of Choice

Giving children appropriate choices throughout their visit helps restore their sense of control. Kids at Mini Miners choose their movie, pick their toothpaste and fluoride flavors, and select a prize from the toy tower when their visit is done. These small decisions make a meaningful difference for a child who feels anxious about being told what to do.

Tell-Show-Do

Dr. Grover uses a technique recommended by the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry in which she explains what she is going to do in child-friendly language, shows the child the tools or demonstrates the process, and then performs the procedure. This removes the element of surprise that often fuels dental fear.

Our "No Scary Words" Policy

Mini Miners Pediatric Dentistry follows a strict "No Scary Words" policy because the language children hear about the dentist directly shapes how they feel about it. Dr. Grover and her team never use words that could trigger fear or anxiety in a young patient.

Words you will never hear at Mini Miners include "shot," "needle," "pain," "hurt," and "bleeding." Instead, the team uses child-friendly alternatives that describe the same procedures without creating alarm. For example, Dr. Grover might say "sleepy juice" instead of "injection," or "Mr. Thirsty" instead of "suction." Instruments are described by what they do in fun, age-appropriate terms rather than by their clinical names.

This policy extends beyond the treatment room. We encourage parents to use the same approach at home when talking about upcoming dental visits. Telling your child the dentist will "count their teeth and take pictures of their smile" is much more helpful than saying "it won't hurt." Even well-meaning reassurances that reference pain can plant the idea of pain in a child's mind.

The No Scary Words approach is simple, but it is remarkably effective. Children who have never heard frightening language about the dentist are far less likely to develop dental anxiety in the first place.

Parents as Partners in Overcoming Dental Anxiety

Mini Miners Pediatric Dentistry believes parents play a vital role in helping children overcome dental fear. That is why we welcome parents into the treatment room during every appointment and include you in all decisions about your child's care.

Many parents carry their own dental anxieties from childhood. If that sounds familiar, you are not alone, and it does not make you a bad parent. However, children are remarkably perceptive. They pick up on a parent's body language, tone of voice, and word choices about the dentist. If a parent expresses dread about dental visits, children are more likely to feel the same way.

Dr. Grover helps parents become part of the solution. She will coach you on how to talk about the dentist at home using positive, low-pressure language. She will explain each step of your child's treatment so you feel confident and calm in the room. And she will work with you to set realistic goals for your child's progress, especially if your child needs several visits to build comfort.

At Mini Miners, you are never asked to wait in the lobby while your child is treated behind closed doors. You can sit beside your child, hold their hand, and be present for the entire experience. That partnership between parent and provider is one of the most powerful tools for helping anxious kids feel safe.

Every anxious child deserves a dentist who understands their fear.
