Sedation Dentistry Options For Kids In Westminster, CO

Hot Air Balloon

Not every child needs sedation, and sedation is never our first step. We start with behavioral techniques like tell-show-do, our No Scary Words policy, and child-paced appointments. When those approaches aren't enough, sedation gives children the support they need to get through treatment safely and without distress. The goal is always the least invasive option that keeps your child comfortable.

Our Three Levels of Sedation at a Glance

Mini Miners Pediatric Dentistry offers sedation dentistry options for kids in Westminster, CO across three levels. Each is designed for a different situation, and Dr. Grover will recommend the one that best fits your child.

Mild: Nitrous oxide (laughing gas). Your child stays awake and aware but feels relaxed and calm. Ideal for mild anxiety or routine procedures. Effects wear off in minutes.

Moderate: Oral conscious sedation. Your child takes a liquid medication that creates deep relaxation and typically causes amnesia. They stay conscious but drowsy. Ideal for significant anxiety or longer procedures. Recovery takes several hours.

Deep: General anesthesia. A licensed anesthesiologist puts your child fully to sleep. They feel nothing and remember nothing. Ideal for extensive dental work, severe anxiety, special needs, or very young children who cannot cooperate safely. Recovery takes several hours.

Dr. Grover always starts at the lowest effective level and only escalates when clinically necessary.

Mild Sedation: Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)

Nitrous oxide is a safe, mild sedation option used at Mini Miners Pediatric Dentistry to help children with mild anxiety relax during dental procedures. As part of our sedation dentistry options for kids in Westminster, CO, nitrous is the gentlest option we offer and the most commonly used sedation in pediatric dentistry.

What it is: A blend of nitrous oxide and oxygen delivered through a small mask that sits on your child's nose.

When we use it: For children with mild nervousness, during routine procedures like fillings, or to help a child who is slightly apprehensive stay calm and cooperative.

What your child experiences: Your child will choose a "flavor" for the mask, like bubble gum or mango. They breathe normally through their nose while watching a movie on our ceiling-mounted TVs. They stay fully awake and able to respond. Most children describe feeling a bit floaty, giggly, or relaxed.

Recovery: The effects wear off within minutes after the mask is removed. Your child can return to school or normal activities immediately. There are no lasting effects and no post-appointment restrictions.

Moderate Sedation: Oral Conscious Sedation

Oral conscious sedation provides a deeper level of relaxation for Westminster children who need more support than nitrous oxide alone. Mini Miners Pediatric Dentistry uses this option when a child's anxiety is significant or the procedure requires sustained cooperation.

What it is: A combination of oral medications in liquid form that your child swallows before the procedure begins. The medications induce relaxation, drowsiness, and consistently produce an amnesic effect.

When we use it: For children with moderate to significant dental anxiety, during longer procedures, for children who weren't calm with nitrous oxide alone, or when multiple treatments need to happen in one visit.

What your child experiences: Your child swallows the liquid medication and then watches a movie while it takes effect. After a short period, they become drowsy and deeply relaxed. They remain conscious and responsive throughout but are unlikely to remember the appointment afterward. This amnesic effect means children often have no negative memory of the experience.

Recovery: The medications take several hours to wear off completely. Your child will need to rest at home and be monitored by an adult for the remainder of the day. Plan for a quiet afternoon. Most children are back to normal by the following morning.

Deep Sedation: General Anesthesia

General anesthesia is the deepest sedation level offered at Mini Miners Pediatric Dentistry, reserved for children who need complete unconsciousness during dental treatment. A licensed anesthesiologist administers and monitors all general anesthesia in our office.

What it is: An anesthesiologist administers anesthesia through a combination of inhaled gas and an IV to create a state of complete unconsciousness.

When we use it: For children with severe dental anxiety who cannot tolerate treatment even with oral sedation, for children with special needs who cannot sit safely in the dental chair, for very young children requiring extensive work, or when multiple complex procedures need to be completed in a single visit.

What your child experiences: The anesthesiologist monitors your child's vitals before any sedation begins. Your child watches a movie and breathes in the anesthesia through a mask. Once asleep, parents move to the waiting room. The anesthesiologist places an IV and continuously monitors vitals throughout. Your child is completely asleep and unaware during treatment. After the procedure, parents are brought into recovery before your child wakes so they hear your voice first.

Recovery: General anesthesia takes several hours to wear off. Your child will be drowsy and likely confused as they wake. An adult must monitor your child in the same room for the remainder of the day. Most children are back to themselves by the next morning.

Our Anesthesiology Partners

Mini Miners Pediatric Dentistry partners with two local anesthesiology practices to provide safe, high-quality general anesthesia in the comfort of our dental office rather than a hospital setting.

Mile High Anesthesia and Rocky Mountain Dental Anesthesia are our anesthesiology partners. Both practices specialize in pediatric dental anesthesia and bring their equipment and expertise directly to our office. Having general anesthesia in a familiar, kid-friendly environment rather than a hospital makes the experience less intimidating for children and more convenient for families.

The anesthesiologist manages all aspects of general anesthesia independently while Dr. Grover focuses entirely on the dental treatment. This division of responsibility means both safety and dental care receive full, undivided attention.

Which Sedation Level Is Right for Your Child?

Choosing the right sedation dentistry options for kids in Westminster, CO depends on several factors that Dr. Grover evaluates with you before making a recommendation. No child receives sedation without a thoughtful assessment first.

Factors we consider:

Your child's age. Very young children who cannot understand or follow instructions may need deeper sedation for their safety.

Anxiety level. A child with mild nervousness may do well with nitrous oxide alone. A child who has had negative dental experiences or who panics in the chair may need oral sedation or general anesthesia.

Extent of dental work needed. A single filling may only require nitrous oxide. Multiple crowns or extensive treatment may call for oral sedation or general anesthesia so everything can be completed in one comfortable visit.

Medical history. Some medical conditions or medications can affect which sedation options are safe for your child. Dr. Grover reviews your child's complete medical history before recommending any sedation.

Previous dental experiences. If your child had a difficult experience in the past, that informs how much support they'll need this time.

Our team discusses all options with you openly and helps you make the decision that feels right for your child and your family.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is sedation dentistry safe for children?

Yes. Pediatric sedation dentistry has an excellent safety record when administered by trained professionals. Dr. Grover is a Board-Certified Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry with specific training in sedation protocols. For general anesthesia, a licensed anesthesiologist independently monitors your child's vitals throughout the entire procedure. Mini Miners Pediatric Dentistry follows all current safety guidelines and maintains emergency equipment on-site at all times.

Will my child feel any pain during sedation?

No. All three levels of sedation are designed to prevent pain and discomfort. Nitrous oxide creates relaxation while local anesthesia numbs the treatment area. Oral sedation creates deep relaxation and amnesia alongside local numbing. General anesthesia renders your child completely unconscious and unable to feel anything. Dr. Grover ensures your child is fully comfortable before any dental work begins, regardless of the sedation level.

How do I know which sedation level my child needs?

Dr. Grover evaluates several factors: your child's age, anxiety level, medical history, the extent of dental work needed, and any previous dental experiences. For mild anxiety and simple procedures, nitrous oxide is often sufficient. For significant anxiety or longer treatments, oral sedation may be recommended. General anesthesia is reserved for extensive treatment, severe anxiety, or children with special needs. We discuss all options with you before making a recommendation.

Can my child eat before a sedation appointment?

For nitrous oxide, there are typically no fasting restrictions. For oral sedation and general anesthesia, your child will need to avoid food and drinks for a specific period before the appointment to ensure safety. Mini Miners Pediatric Dentistry will provide detailed fasting instructions when you schedule the appointment. Following these guidelines exactly is important for your child's safety during sedation.

How long does recovery take after sedation?

Recovery time depends on the sedation level. Nitrous oxide wears off within minutes and your child can return to school immediately. Oral sedation takes several hours to wear off completely, and your child should rest at home for the remainder of the day. General anesthesia also requires several hours of recovery with adult supervision. Most children are back to normal by the following morning after oral sedation or general anesthesia.

Will my child remember the dental procedure?

With nitrous oxide, your child will remember the visit but will have felt relaxed during it. With oral conscious sedation, the medication consistently produces an amnesic effect, meaning most children have little to no memory of the procedure. With general anesthesia, your child will have no memory of the treatment at all. For children with dental anxiety, the absence of negative memories helps make future visits easier.

Does Mini Miners offer sedation for children with special needs?

Yes. Mini Miners Pediatric Dentistry has extensive experience providing sedation for children with autism spectrum disorder, sensory processing differences, developmental delays, and other conditions. Dr. Grover evaluates each child individually and recommends the sedation level that provides the safest, most comfortable experience. For many special needs children, general anesthesia allows comprehensive dental treatment to be completed in a single visit without distress.
