Sedation Dentistry Options for Kids in Lafayette, CO
Comfortable Dental Care for Every Kid
At Mini Miners Pediatric Dentistry, we know that trips to the dentist can feel scary for some children.
That's why we offer a range of sedation dentistry options for kids in Lafayette, CO to help make every dental visit comfortable and stress-free. Whether your child has dental anxiety, special needs, or needs a longer or more involved treatment, we have a safe sedation level that fits.
Our Three Tiers of Pediatric Sedation
Mini Miners Pediatric Dentistry offers three levels of sedation for kids, each one designed to match your child's comfort needs.
Gentle Sedation: Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)
What It Is: A safe, odorless gas mixed with oxygen that helps children relax in the dental chair.
When We Use It: For kids with mild dental anxiety or during simple procedures where a little extra calm goes a long way.
What to Expect: Your child will get to pick their favorite "flavor" from a fun menu, like bubble gum or mango. We will have them breathe through a small nose mask while they watch a movie. Your child stays fully awake and can talk and respond the whole time. They may feel a little drowsy or giggly while the gas is working.
Recovery: The effects of laughing gas wear off within minutes after treatment. Your child can go right back to school or normal activities the same day.

The bubble gum flavored gas helps me feel less anxious about having my tooth decay treated.

Moderate Sedation: Oral Conscious Sedation
What It Is: A combination of two safe liquid medications (Versed and Hydroxyzine) that help your child feel deeply relaxed and sleepy. This type of sedation also commonly causes an amnesic effect, meaning your child likely won't remember the dental visit.
When We Use It: For children with moderate to high dental anxiety, longer or more involved procedures, or kids who need more than laughing gas alone to stay calm.
What to Expect: Your child will drink the liquid medication and then get to relax and watch a movie while it takes effect. After a short wait, they will start to feel very drowsy but will stay conscious throughout the visit. Because of the amnesic effect, most children do not recall what happened during their appointment.
Recovery: The sedation medication takes several hours to fully wear off. Your child will need to rest at home and be watched by an adult for the remainder of the day.
Deep Sedation: General Anesthesia
What It Is: A licensed anesthesiologist gives your child anesthesia through a breathing mask and an IV to put them into a deep, comfortable sleep where they feel no pain at all.
When We Use It: For children with special needs, extreme dental anxiety, or those who need a large amount of dental work done in one visit. General anesthesia makes sure your child feels zero pain or discomfort throughout the entire procedure.
What to Expect: Before anything begins, an anesthesiologist will check and monitor your child's vitals. Your child will get to watch a movie and breathe in the anesthesia through a gentle mask. Once your child falls asleep, parents will move to the waiting room. The anesthesiologist will then place an IV and continue to watch your child's vitals for the entire dental procedure. Your child will be completely asleep and unaware during treatment. When the procedure is finished, parents are brought into the recovery room before your child wakes up so that your voice is the first thing they hear. As they come to, they will feel drowsy and may be confused for a short time.
Recovery: The effects of general anesthesia take several hours to fully wear off. Your child will need to rest at home and be watched by an adult in the same room for the rest of the day.
