What is a Dental Emergency?

Some situations need immediate professional care while others can be safely managed at home. Here are signs your child needs dental care as soon as possible:

  • They have signs of an infection (their lip, cheek, or mouth is swollen, or they have a toothache and fever)

  • They've knocked out a permanent tooth

  • They've broken a tooth or any dental work

  • They have bleeding that won’t stop

  • They’re in pain and aren't able to comfortably eat or sleep

Common Dental Emergencies

Toothache

  • First, look in their mouth to find the cause. It may just be something stuck in their teeth.

  • If this is the case, gently floss and have them swish with water.

  • If you don't see anything, give us a call.

  • You can give your child over-the-counter pain reliever.

  • To reduce pain and swelling, hold a cold compress on their lip or cheek for 10-minute intervals.

Knocked-Out Tooth

  • Call us immediately – time is critical!

  • Find the tooth and pick it up by top, not the root.

  • Gently remove dirt, but do not scrub or remove any attached tissue.

  • If possible, try to reinsert the tooth in its socket.

  • If that's not possible, place the tooth in a cup of milk or saliva.

Broken or Chipped Tooth

  • Rinse the mouth with warm water.

  • Apply a cold compress to reduce swelling.

  • Call our office.

  • If you can find the broken piece, bring it with you to our office.

How to Avoid Dental Emergencies

Accidents happen, and there are some things you just can’t prevent. However, you can help reduce your chances of dental emergencies by following these tips:

  • Maintain regular dental checkups to catch and address potential problems early.

  • Encourage good daily brushing and flossing habits.

  • Have your child wear a custom mouthguard when playing sports, especially contact sports.

  • Watch for bad habits, such as chewing on ice, toys, pencils, or using their teeth to open packaging.
